Game Day Write-ups

Wednesday, Sept 13

The Gainesville Hawks had their first wins last night against Unity Braxton. The varsity started us off strong winning two games in a row. We had 2 great kills from Aubrey Shelton followed by a nice serving run by Arissa Malaka. The girls played well together as a team and are excited for this season. Our JV team also had a great shut out at Unity Braxton. We had two great serving runs from Ellie Boyer-Bollig, serving 11 in a row, and Maddy Fies serving 8 in a row. The team also had a few nice plays including a nice kill from Lily McDaniel. The teams will take on Bull Run away next Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Wednesday, Sept. 20

&The Lady Hawks continued their winning streak with a win last night against Bull Run. The Varsity team started us off strong winning the first game 25-8. We had great hits at the net by 8th graders Kenzie Gregory and Aubrey Shelton and 7th grader Arissa Malaka. However, the game was really held together by our setter Mackenzie Mattran. She read the court beautifully and handled blocking at the net like a pro. Although off to a great start, the second game got away from us with Bull Run taking an early lead. However, we rallied for a third game winning 15-10. Our JV team came out excited after the end of the varsity game. They were eager to win the game doing so in 2. Kera Teng held steady having two strong serving runs. We had some nice net play by Sophia Angeles. Overall, the highlight of the JV match was Jenna Karls who played amazing all around. She had several great saves and a couple of nice hits from the backrow.

Wednesday, Sept. 27

The Hawks Volleyball team suffered their first loss last night against a strong Reagan team. The Varsity played like they were nervous from the very beginning and despite some amazing hits at the net by Daniella Diaz (including two cross court hits that Reagan could not pick up) they were unable to pull it together. The took a blow in the first set that was hard to watch. They came together in the second game and after finally getting rid of those nerves played a good game. We had trouble in serving that really clenched the game for Reagan. We were hoping for redemption with the JV team, and it looked like we might get it. They played a good game of volleyball in the first set, but lost to Reagan. They came back in the second set and won. There were some amazing plays all around by Maddy Fies. She really hussled on the court and was not going to let anything past her.  However, Reagan ended up victorious. The Varsity lost in 2 sets and the JV lost in 3.

Monday, Oct. 2

The game last night was one of the best games of volleyball I have seen in a long time. The girls played their hearts out and it was so much fun. The varsity girls started off strong winning the first game 25-20. Marsteller came back in full force the second game , but our girls were not going down without a fight. The girls dug the ball up and filled all the holes on the court. Leading the defense was Addy Yamagata who played phenomenally the entire game. She was everywhere on the court saving balls left and right. Including no less than 3 saves that even had the ref in disbelief. We ended up losing the second game 23-25. Again, the girls fought hard. In the 3rd set, the team was ready after a rousing pep talk from Arissa Malaka. We had the early led with Addeline Heidtke serving 5 points in a row. We had beautiful team work and plays at the net led by Mackie Mattron and Kenzie Gregory. Unfortunately, some poor calls ultimately led us to lose the game 13-15. I could not be more proud of the team after their performance last night. They completely deserved to win that game.

I will call the JV game “the revenge”. Although they lost the first game 24-26, the girls were in the fight from the beginning. The standouts last night were really our setters. We also had some outstanding plays by our starting setter Lily Zealor who played awesome at the net with several tips and great coverage. Maddy Fies really stepped up for the team filling in for setter. She did a great job of getting to the ball and helping her team mates make great plays. That hard work paid off in the second game as our girls won 25-20. That pushed us into a 3rd game where the girls were able to pull off the win taking the game 15-6. We are so proud of the hard work by both teams and the well-earned victory for our JV girls.

Wednesday, Oct. 4

The Hawks had another great victory last night to bring the varsity team to 3-2 for the season and 1-0 in regional play. They played together well winning in 2 sets. We had some standouts performances from Jenny Cumba who made some great decisions at the net, along with Kenzie Gregory and Aubrey Shelton who had 3 kills each for the night. The JV team continued their winning streak to bring them to 4-1 for the season. All the girls played well and easily defeated the Mustangs from Metz. The girls had a lot of really nice plays but leading the way was Lily McDaniel making some great plays at the net and Kera Teng with some nice hits at the net and serving 12 points in a row. We also had some great plays by Mackenzie Toth with two great hits at the net and Ryquah Shaikh with great footwork on defense. Next week we will travel to Nokesville in another regional game.

Wednesday, Oct. 11

The Volleyball team traveled to Nokesville to take on the Tigers. Both teams came away with the win. The Varsity team had great leadership on the court under setter Mackenzie Mattron. Also, keeping the team motivated and focused was our Libero Addison Yamagata. She had great control over play in the back court. The JV team also showed great teamwork in their win. They were led by setters Ellie Byer-Bollig and Lily Zealor who made lots of really smart plays at the net.

Monday, Oct. 16

The Hawks took on Unity Braxton on Monday. It was great game for the ladies with some phenomenal plays. We had some great plays at the net by Jenny Cumba, Gabby Rodriguez, and Mackenzie Gregory. Serving was led by Mackenzie Mattron and Daniella Diaz, who had a standout game on her own. The girls played well as a team in their victory over the Jaguars. The JV team also made some great plays during the win. Leading our hitters was Lily McDaniel with 3, and Mackenzie Toth and Jenna Karls each with 2 hits.

Monday, Oct. 23

The Gainesville Hawks played a much-improved Bull Run team last night. The Varsity team started off strong in the first set playing well as a team. The second set was a different story and the team was behind most of the game. However, they refused to give up and came back and won the second set. The girls were lead by team captain and Libero Addy Yamagata who held the team together with her constant communication on the court. Add to that several outstanding saves and impossible digs and it made for an entertaining night. She couldn’t have done it alone and was assisted in our victory by Kenzie Gregory who had several great hits at the net, Aubrey Shelton who was on fire last night with 4 kills at the net, and Mackie Mattron whose smart plays at the net, including 2 beautiful tips to just the right spot, helped to seal our victory. Overall all the girls played and contributed to our win!

The JV Girls continued that streak and were able to win against Bull Run as well. We had a stand out serving run from our 6th grader Mackenzie Toth who served an incredible 10 in a row! We also had 3 kills from Sophia Angeles and great hits from Kera Teng, Lily McDaniels, and Jenna Karls. Both teams will take on a strong Reagan team on Wednesday. Please come out and support our Girls Volleyball team!! We only have 2 games left!

Wednesday, Oct. 25

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN! Last night our Lady Hawks took on a very tough Reagan Team. The game started off strong for us with making some phenomenal plays and we had great back and forth between the two teams. We were able to maintain control of the first set and won 25-20. The second set we knew they would come back strong. Reagan led for most of the 2nd set, and it was close the entire game. However, thanks to a phenomenal serving run by our Libero Addy Yamagata the girls came away with the victory, 25-18. The stats for this game show the amazing effort put forth by the team. Addy Yamagata had 11 digs in some incredibly, almost unbelievable moments.   She was aided by awesome attacks at the net by Aubrey Shelton (6 hits with 1 kill), Mackenzie Gregory (4 hits with 1 kill), and Daniella Diaz (7 hits at the net). Last night's win really was a team effort and could not have happened without all the girls trying their best.

Unfortunately, our JV team did not have the same luck. They worked really hard and won the first set. The second set Reagan wanted to win and kept it close the entire game. The girls worked really hard, but they were not able to hold on to the second set and lost 26-24. The third set the girls let their emotions get the best of them. We had some mistakes that helped Reagan get a strong lead at the end of the game. We had some great serving from Jenna Karls and Mackenzie Toth both with 5 aces and no serving errors. The Hawks will take on Marsteller in our final game on Monday, Oct. 30th. Come out and support our amazing Hawks!!
