GVMS Drama Club Drama Builds Character with comedy and tragedy masks

What is the GVMS Drama Club?
The GVMS Drama Club is the cast and crew of the current play we are working on, AND the students who attend Improvisation Ensemble Days.
During the 2023/2024 school year we will be producing a short play in the fall, a cabaret in the spring, and have Improvisation Ensemble meetings on select Mondays and Thursdays.

The Cast of the Plays

To be in the cast (as in, an actor) for one of our plays, students should memorize a one-minute monologue and perform that during an audition. Monologue choices will be provided and rehearsed at our audition workshops.

To be cast in the spring cabaret, students should prepare one minute (16 bars) of a pop song that they can sing well at an audition. Auditions for the 2024 spring cabaret will be held in late November. The date will be announced the first week of November.

Audition Workshops are held the week before auditions. Workshops are an opportunity for students to learn how to audition, and practice auditioning.

Auditions will take place after school on a predetermined date. Auditions are announced at school on the morning announcements, in the weekly Hawk Highlights newsletter, and on this page.

Rehearsals will start the week following auditions and are every day (Monday -Friday) from 3pm- 6pm in the Drama Room (1121B) or the Chorus Room for the cabaret.

P
erformances are on Friday, & Saturday of the performance week. All performances are at 7pm, and there is usually a matinee performance on Saturdays at 3 or 4pm.

All students who are interested in auditioning for a role must be available for
all performances, and all tech rehearsals during "tech week" (the week before performances). Performance dates and tech rehearsal dates are announced at the Audition Workshops.

The Crew of the Plays

The crew is a group of students who perform various backstage duties during the last few rehearsals ("tech week") and all performances of the play or musical. There are makeup, lighting, sound, set, curtain, costume, and props crews. Students are trained to perform their duties and do not need to have prior knowledge of that area. Interested students will be required to interview after the cast is chosen, but well before the performance dates. The Crew will be selected from those who interview.

Improvisation Ensemble

Improvisation Ensemble meetings will run on select Mondays (7th and 8th grade) and Thursdays (6th grade only) from 3:00pm-4:30pm, beginning in November, 2023.  Improvisation Ensemble meetings are open to GVMS students who are interested in learning more about improvisation and theatre. Students will play improv games and practice the craft of improvisation and acting. Students do not have to audition to participate, but must complete a permission slip that they can obtain in room 1121B (The Drama Room) the first week of November.

Participation in Improvisation Ensemble does not guarantee casting in future shows with the GVMS Drama Club.

Frequently asked questions...

How do I join drama club?

  • Students can join if they are cast from the audition of either play, if they are chosen (after they interview) to be a crew member for either show, or if they participate in Improvisation Ensemble.

  •

What if I am not cast as an actor in the play or cabaret?

  • You can still participate by interviewing to join our crew for either show, or by joining us for Improvisation Ensemble meetings!

  •

I want to be in the cast or crew of the fall play or the spring cabaret , but I am not available for all of the tech week dates or the performance dates, what do I do?

  • I am sorry, but you must be available for all the tech week dates and the performance dates to participate in GVMS Drama Club productions. If a show doesn't work out with your schedule, you can always join us for Improvisation Ensemble meetings!

  •

Do you have to be in the fall play to do the spring play?

  • No! If you are only interested in performing in the spring play you can audition for that later in the year(November or December). Audition dates and rehearsal times for the spring play will be announced in the weekly Hawk Highlights newsletter, on the morning announcements, and on this page.

  •

I might have to miss some rehearsals; can I still audition for the fall play or spring play?

  • Doing a play is much like participating in a sport- it is a big time commitment. I would like my cast to be at all rehearsals. I will allow only 2 missed rehearsals. If you have a conflicting school function (like chorus) or a family commitment, let me know the dates before you audition (I will have a form for you to fill out) and we can talk about it.
