Happy New Year GVMS Students and Families!

Welcome back to school! After some quality time with my family, I'm excited to be back at GVMS to finish out the remainder of the 21-22 school year. As much as I've enjoyed a few extra days, some snow (I am from Buffalo after all!), and a quiet school building, I'm ready and excited to welcome back our students and staff from their extended holiday break. With our extra time out of the building, I wanted to send a few reminders and updates so that all of our students, families, and staff are ready to return on Monday. As an important reminder, Monday, January 10th will be a B day.

Wearing Masks: It's incredibly important that all students are wearing their masks over their mouth and nose in school, without exception. Unless actively eating or drinking, every individual at Gainesville Middle School must wear a mask during the school day and at after school events. Please note that any visitor to Gainesville Middle School must also wear a mask when entering the building at any time (including sporting events). Please refer to the PWCS Mask Guidance if you have questions. Additionally, please make sure you are completing the PWCS Daily Home Screening For Students each morning before sending your students off to school.

Canvas and Quarantine: If your student is out sick or needs to quarantine due to close contacts, please remember that they should be accessing Canvas to find any information needed to stay up to date. Canvas pages should include current assignments and directions for their completion, important information, and teacher contact information.

Code Orange Office Hours: As shared in a previous communication, we have a new code for potential inclement weather, Code Orange. Students are encouraged to use Code Orange days to catch up on any previously assigned work in each of their classes. Throughout the Code Orange day, all GVMS teachers will have office hours for students to log on to Zoom and get additional help with their assignments. By the end of next week, teachers will have updated their Canvas pages to share their specific office hour time slot and their Zoom information. On the morning of a Code Orange, teachers will update their Canvas pages to reflect which previous assignments students can work on. (Note: Any updates to the Code Orange office hours schedule can be found on the individual teacher's Canvas page or the GVMS Parents and Students Canvas page). The Code Orange office hour schedule is below:

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Encore - Gifted, FACS, Art, Tech Ed, Drama, Communications, Career Investigations, Health/PE, and Music

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Language Arts, Creative Writing, Language and Literature Support

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Math, English Language Learners Support, and Special Education Support

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Social Studies, Spanish, and Library

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Science, French, and Counseling Department

*Note: Please refer to the GVMS Parents and Students Canvas page for any additional information.

Code Orange Internet Access: The new Code Orange inclement weather day will allow for students to continue in their learning process and connect with teachers and staff members. With that said, I know that there may be some members of our GVMS community that don't have access to Internet at home. If your household does not have Internet, please complete this Microsoft Form so that one of our staff members can help with potential solutions. As a reminder, students should be charging their laptops each night before coming to school!

End of the Marking Period: As a reminder, the second marking period will be wrapping up in three weeks (time flies!) Now is the time for students to communicate with their teachers regarding assignments, assessments, and grades. Please remind students to take advantage of any available retake opportunities and to catch up on their work. We know the end of the marking period can be stressful for all, so please make sure your student is staying on top of their work!

Calendar Updates: Inclement weather bring changes to our athletics and activities calendar. For up-to-date information, please check the GVMS website.

Athletics Events and No-Bag Policy: PWCS is enacting a no bag policy for all indoor athletic events at the middle school level. This is in alignment with the policy currently in place at all high schools. This includes backpacks, purses, camera equipment bags, etc. Small wallet-sized clutches are permitted. The policy also allows for clear diaper and medically necessary bags to be brought in. These bags may be subject to search. This policy will go into effect for indoor athletic events at the middle level beginning Monday, January 10, 2021. GVMS will have a plan in place to secure any student bookbags as needed during athletic events. We will not be responsible for securing bags from any attendees who are not students at Gainesville Middle School. Signage will be posted to remind attendees prior to arriving at the ticket area. We thank you in advance for adhering to this policy and look forward to having you with us to cheer on our student-athletes.

We thank you for your patience this week. I know our teachers and staff are eager to have everybody back in the classroom. Students, I can't wait to see you on Monday!

Mary Kate Graham
