Last week we completed our Unit I Project and students have received their grades. The project was a mini science board for a lab we did concerning the effect temperature had on the breathing rate of fish. Attached to their project was a rubric that identified ways they can improve their project.  This lays out the foundation on how they are to complete this aspect of the Science Fair Project (Science Inquiry Project). Most students received a copy of the Science Inquiry Packet.   On Friday a sheet that asks parents and students to sign so they know the expectations of the project is due.  The following week the proposal is due.  This proposal includes the EDD (Experimental Design) which will lay out the experiment that the student wants to do.  It to must be approved by both the parent and the teacher. The packet contains most of the dates and these will be passed on my calendar shortly. This week in class we are discussing the characteristics of life determining what makes something living and then moving into cell theory and microscopes. Students will learn the different parts of a microscope, how they work and a little history on the microscope.

Friday of last week we took our Science Investigation Test. Scores of should be complete in the next day or so.  Yesterday we did a reflection of the unit, finished tests and pretests that were not complete from Friday. Students who scored a B and below are welcome to highly encouraged to retake sections of the test.  To do so, students will print off the appropriate reteach sheet and complete it.  They will then check their answers with a key at school and ask me for help if they need it.  I am available at lunch and before school upon request. They must also have the appropriate sections of their folder complete as well.  Once this is done they may take the retake. Before we start the next unit I am going to do a lesson called SIP (Science Inquiry Project) in a day.  Basically a truncated version of their science fair project so that they have an overview of the expectations.  Their project for the first unit will to make a mini science board and paper. We will work on this on Wednesday and Thursday.  They will be included in their interim grades. In addition, I passed back the next unit for the folder. Students with other assignments complete were to work on the vocabulary. I will pass back pretest grades later this week and students can start studying and reviewing.  We will start with Characteristics of Life and a lab asking students to define life and to test their hypothesis. Please contact me if you have any questions. Again my contact me link is now up and running.
