We have completed our first week from break and have been working on DNA.  This unit that not only deals with DNA but genetics relates to wonderful topics for family discussions.  These include discussions on family history and geneology, gmo's and genetic modified organisms, cloning, and more.  As we enter a wold where we have begun to modify humans it is important to start the moral discussions of these topics at home.  Other interesting discussions include 23 and me and genetic testing done on infants for medical purposes. In class we will discuss what was the human genome project, what is a clone and how did the first scientist accomplish this in a sheep, what is a GMO and what are some arguments for and against, what is CRISPR and how did the first genetically modified human come to be as well as how do we predict the possibility of different traits and the genome project.  We will learn about Mendel and his peas and the history of the discovery of the shape of DNA. Last week, amongst all the snow days, we learned the shape of DNA, What the letters in DNA stand for and what makes up the strand of DNA.  We reviewed how Chromosomes are made of DNA and that a section represents a gene.  The gene is code for a specific trait. Students have been givien there vocabulary and should be working on them at home.  We are also on oue last weeks of working on the science fair projects. Last friday the graph, data table and results paragraphs were due.  Before break, students were given aids, a demonstration, and class time (including this past Thursday) to work on their projects.  This Friday, the rough draft for the conclusion paragraph is due.  The firnal report is to be typed, printed and submited on January 24th.  In addition, retakes for standards 9 and 10 must be completed by Friday.  Please email me if you have any questions.

This week we have started cell division.  Students should be working in their workbook on Chapter 5 Lesson 3.  We will have a test on Standard 9 and 10 next Friday December 13.  Review codes will be coming shortly. Attached to the blog, the calendar and in the Files and Documents is the review sheet. I will also be going over how to graph for the SIP project and write the results paragraph.  These are due the Friday after we get back from Break.  Students should be done with everything up to the experiment and be working on that at this time. I am slowly editing the drafts that the students have submitted and am returning them as I go along. Next week we will look into the role cell division has on cancer and introduce DNA.  If you have any questions please email me.  St 9 photosynthesis and St 10 cell Division Review Sheet.docx

This week we will be having a test on Standard 7 Cell Organization and Standard 8 Cell Transportation.  This is a different division of standards than I usually have but I want to test before thanksgiving break.  Because this is a different break the quizizz will also include standard 9 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration.  008888 is the code. .  Standard 7 and 8 Review Sheet.doc This is the review sheet that will be passed out today.   I will be posting grades today.  Please check to see if you or your student is missing anything. In regards to the Science Inquirry project (Science Fair Project), I have walked the students through their works cited page and have begun if not finished walking them through the research essay form.  Students should be typing them into their 365 accounts so that they have access both at home and at school.  Students are always welcome to come in at lunch for assistance.  I will be having computers in my room the two days before Thanksgiving break to give students an opportunity to type as well. Students may always hand in late work but the later they become the more compacted the project becomes.

We have had a wonderful week and I hope everyone has a great weekend.  Do not forget we have monday off.  We have just completed our first week of research for our Science Inquiry (Science Fair) Project.  The students should print out their abstracts and title page if they have not done so and submit them on Tuesday.  I will then give feedback and make corrections.  When the students get their papers back back they should make the corrections, but do not print again until the final drafts.  The students were to have the the research essays and works cited done by this coming Friday but we will have a field trip and the computers will not be available so I have postponed it to the following week.  We will go over some of the directions, techniques and strategies next week so if they want to work on them at home and get a little ahead they can.  All students should be done with their research for the science fair.  I have attached the form that we did our research on.  Please ask the students to show you the form and discuss what they have discovered.   Next week we willl be returning to our regular curriculum and be moving on to standard 7 cell transport and standard 8 photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Over the next week we will discuss dialysis, chemical poisening through air and more.  For homework students should be working on Chapter 4 Lesson 3 and 4 as well as Chapter 5 Lesson 1 and 2 in their workbooks. We will be finishing this up the following week. Please email me if you have any questions.

This week we will take our last test of the quarter.  It will cover standards 5 Cell Theory and 6 Cell Structure and Function. Student have received a study guide.  on addition they may go to and enter this code 135266and practice.  The end of the quarter is arriving quickly.  The last day is November 1st.  Finally we are working on finalizing our science fair project topics.  We will be starting research on the week of November 4th.  Reminder there is no school November 4th and 5th for students.  Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.Unit 2 Cell Theory _ Cell Structure Study Guide 2019.doc

This past week we finished up on Science Investigations and we are starting cells.  I have named this unit Mission to Mars.  We looked last Friday into the history of space missions both in and out of the United States.  Our essential question we are looking at is, If we are looking for life on other planets and into the universe, how do we identify and determine whether something is alive?  I want students to see that their is a mission to be living on the moon as they finish high school and going to Mars as they go to and finish college or shortly after.  I want them to see how not only can we use the information here on earth, bu that we are taking that information to understand the universe we live in beyond our planet. Form here we reviewed what living things needed and continued to work on developing our small groups or teams.  Yesterday we started to discuss what the characteristics of life are.  We found that defining life is not a single statement but that it takes several characteristics.  Throughout this year we will see how different organisms meet the criteria for being alive in different ways.  In this unit we will focus on how life is made up of one or more cells.  Students were also given an opportunity to learn how to use Edpuzzle.  There will be a few assignments that will be Edpuzzle assignments.  Edpuzzle is an app that had assigned videos I give where the student watches and then answers questions.  The videos include the closed caption and can be rewatched as many times as they need before answering the questions.  These can be for 10% grades but should be fairly high grades since they can return again and again.  They are also not limited to just the video and could open another tab to find the necessary information. Last week we did a practice one on git and one on space for homework they had on the cell theory.   In regard to homework, they need to finish the cell Theory Edpuzzle they were assigned last week by tomorrow night. We will be using this for a small project. Another older assignment is the Fish lab project.  They will need to complete the rough draft this week.  They were given time in class.  They will do the final draft at home.  I am correcting the rough drafts, so students know what they need to fix.  They are welcome to ask me or email me any question they may have regarding this assignment.  The final draft is due next Wednesday. The test has been returned, grades are adjusted online and students who want to retake have until next week to complete the retake.  They need to show me their completed workbook, the review sheet, and their vocabulary. Students also have a new workbook assignment.  They need to work on Chapter 4 (lessons 1&2).  The vocabulary will be distributed shortly. The workbook and vocabulary are due before we review for the test.  This should around October 25th.
