    Due to low participation in the video Zoom office hours, I'm changing the format.  It's been getting awkward when I'm just sitting there staring at myself for an hour and a half!  I've had a handful of you each time, so thanks for stopping in!   From now on, Office Hours are on Fridays from 12-1:30, but instead of being on Zoom they will be via email.  If I need to walk you through something, we can always meet up via video chat.  However, the new email format just means that I'll be glued to my computer for that hour and a half so I'll be able to answer questions immediately.  You may also utilize the "Chat" feature here on Teams, as I'll be checking that as well.   Please let me know if you have any questions!  And, as always, you are welcome to email me outside of those times as well!

    This week, I posted announcements about my chance in Office Hours format, so please be sure to read those. For this week, this was what was posted on Teams for all students: 8th Graders:  Last week, I gave everybody the task of choosing a new project type and getting to work.  Just like in school, I'm giving you two weeks to complete the project.  When you're done, you can just email it to me!  I'm excited to see what you all come up with!   For more details, just take a look at what I posted last week. 6th and 7th Graders: This week's lesson focuses on a skill: Touch Typing!  You'll go through a series of Nearpods that will introduce the skill of Touch Typing and then give you opportunities to practice.  At the end, you can submit a reflection.    Nearpod: The Importance of Touch Typing - CODE: EJXYD  Nearpod: Proper Posture While Typing - CODE: YWCKD  Nearpod: Learning ASDF Keys - CODE: HWFVD  (Optional) Nearpod: Learning JKL Keys - CODE: NQBUT  When finished, practice your typing skills by going to the "Assignments" tab here and going to the "Typing Reflection" assignment.     Hello everyone and hope you are doing well. This week we will be working on cell structure and cell theory.  I will be hosting a Zoom this week.  Please check your emails later this week for your time and codes.  I will be dividing up the classes with when they are to meet.  As part of the zoom we will be doing a Kahoot review.  For this to work you will need access to 2 internet devices.  This is just an option and not required. The Zoom will also not be 90 minutes so you will need to choose one of the other activities. It is part of the choices you have for this week.  There are three other options, 3D Cell Model, Cell Amusement Park and Cell Theory Timeline. If you had chosen one of these in the past choose a different activity.  Before you Zoom or work on any of the choices please review the content PowerPoints for this week.  Take care and hope to see you Thursday.

    8th Grade: We met on Zoom on Monday and it was great to hear from you!  We went over Zoom expectations and the layout of the class. This week's project: work on Project #3. You can choose what type.  Rubrics & Checklists are on Teams, just like they were in class.  If you haven't done the Exploration for that project type yet, I recommend doing that so you can get a feel for it! 6th and 7th Grade: Go through the NearPod lesson to review etiquette for different types of communication. CODE: TFEYC 6th grade: this covers target 6.1: use effective oral communication skills in a variety of settings 7th grade: this covers target 7a: make a business related phone call When you're finished, call a locally owned business and talk to the owner or manager about how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way they do business.  You can find guidelines and a list of business you could call here: Verbal Comm with Entrepreneurs.pdf

    I wanted to say it was good to see so many yesterday.  I did not see everyone, even all those that had been able to join us.  It just isn’t the same as being in the classroom and there were so many more of you. When I try this type of activity again it will be on a smaller scale which should help.  I also want to do more interactive activities where there is more than just me talking. I did want to write out what we talked about yesterday for those who were unable to make it or if you forget.  The first part that we went over yesterday was etiquette in virtual learning spaces.  The 5 SCORE Behaviors we addressed was be on time, stay muted until called on, raise your hand so that I can know you want to be called on, be courteous and respectful to all (for that is the Gainesville Way!), and Do not take pictures of the meeting.  During our meeting students struggled with the second behavior.  It was disruptive yesterday when students unmuted to make a loud noise or share their radio.  I understand that you want and need to talk and see friends.  We need to put our heads together to find a way so that can be met.  However, when teachers are giving important information this makes it difficult.  We do not know what the future will bring. For many different reasons there could be virtual learning in your future and being able to handle yourself appropriately is essential.  Next, I answered a few questions.  The questions that I received can be answered on the commonly asked questions on the district web page.  The first was when can we get into the school to get out stuff.  At this point we have not been given a date.  The principle can only go in to collect mail.  No one knows for sure when we will be let in again.  Teachers, including myself, would also like to get in.  We just have to wait.  Health and safety come first. We also must wait for instructions for library books and instruments. The second question was are we going to have any grades for quarter 4? We will not.  The last day to submit grades will be next Friday, April 24th.  Then this year’s grades will be the average of quarters 1-3.  Students will be moving on to the next grade. Then I discussed the plan for the next several weeks.  On Mondays, I will be uploading assignments into teams and the “Work from Home” folder in my Files and Documents. I will place a set of instructions on my main web page.  In teams open the assignments or the channel of the correct week to locate the assignments.  There will be a PowerPoint for most weeks to review the key ideas.  Then there will be a choice of a couple different activities. You should only work for 90 minutes and this includes the PowerPoint if you choose to use it. At the end of each week email me your work or summary of activities you did, I would love to hear about it. Some of the assignments have rubrics so that you know how it would be graded if it were receiving a grade. Our class timeslot is for Thursdays from 10-1130 but this does not always work for everyone.  That is why we are providing the assignments at the beginning of the week. It is important to keep up with your schoolwork for many reasons even though it is optional.  We talked about habits this year.  In those discussions we spoke about our dreams and aspirations.  We talked about how we have to begin with the end in mind, what we want to do with our lives, and then put first things first and set our goals.  We also discussed how hard it is to change a habit. When we go back to school in the fall this will be very difficult. In addition, we know that over the summer we tend to forget some of what we learned.  If we stop doing schoolwork or did when we first got out this extended the summer by quite a bit meaning that you will be further behind.  The seventh-grade science department is trying to put together activities that are not straight worksheets so that they are more enjoyable, yet have you work on the material.  If you have a different project for

    It was so nice to see all your faces on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I will be live on Teams every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10am to go over English and Math and just to touch base with everyone.  It will be less than a half hour.  All work will be in my Work at Home file on my GVMS page.   You have all week to work on Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.  There is a folder for each week under each subject.  Fridays I have office hours from 1pm - 2:30 to answer emails or get on teams.  You can always write me on this blog as well.  Hope you are checking out my Storyline Online Wednesday's Story.     Reminder that today we will be having our meeting at 10:00 on Zoom. The link and password were sent in a previous email. In the faculty meeting and meetings my children have had in zoom this week there have been some connection issues.  Please be patient and everyone will do their best.  If you are unable to attend, that is okay. I will post the key points of the meeting on my main web page and you are welcome to email me with questions  or chat with me in teams during my office ours on Tuesday.  When you do join any virtual meeting for Gainesville Middle School we do ask that you follow the guidance on attached poster.  We will be looking at how our class will look for the next couple of weeks, where to access materials and more. I look forward to seeing everyone.
