The National History Bee is a competition for school children across America to compete head to head to test their knowledge of history!

Participating students at each school have the opportunity to advance to the regional level and possibly move on to the national competition!

Meeting Dates:
Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 16, Feb. 13, March 12 & April 16
**We will schedule additional dates once we know how many students have qualified for Regionals and Nationals.

Here is how the process works:

November 2019

  • Monthly History Bee meetings begin on Nov. 14.
  • There will be additional meetings/ practices for students who qualified for Regionals starting January- February 2020.

December 2019

  • Dec. 20- All permission slips to participate must be completed and returned to Mrs. Ware in the Library or Mr. Shipp in room #1207 in order to receive a study packet.
  • Use the resources provided to you as well as any other available resources to study any and everything history related to prepare for the written test.

January 2020

  • Candidates will complete a timed 30 minute, Online Regional Qualifying Exam. Specific date, time, and location to be determined, but candidates will be notified when details are finalized.

February 2020

  • Students who have scored high enough to qualify for Regionals will be notified. Sponsors will notify participants either way.
  • Study your history and attend review sessions held by the History Bee sponsors. Review session schedule TBA.
  • Saturday, Feb. 22, Thomas Jefferson HS for Science & Technology, Alexandria, VA-Mark your calendars for the Regional “buzzer” competition. All Students who qualified for the Regional History Bee Competition should plan to attend. Students will need to have their own transportation to the Regional Bee and it will cost $40 per student to participate.

March 2020

  • The top 10 scoring students will participate in an Intramural Bee to determine a school winner. Specific date, time, and location to be determined, but candidates will be notified when details are finalized.

June 2020

  • The National History Bee will take place and involves a weekend full of competition and fun events with finalists from all over the country! Location and date TBA, but it will probably be around June 6-10.
  • Last year 11 finalists at Gainesville Middle School scored high enough to move on to Regionals! Eight of those went on to qualify for the national competition that was held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bring back your permission form to Mrs. Ware or Mr. Shipp by December 20 to receive a study packet and start studying!
